• As a then-undiscovered Canadian jazz pianist, Oscar Peterson cut these trio dates in Montreal between 1945-1947. They are also available with much more detailed studio information on the Classics label. In many instances during these 16 sides of interpreted swing-to-bop standards, you hear a more deliberate pianist than the one who would shortly thereafter become a recognized freewheeling virtuoso. He does cut loose on the boogie-woogie barnburner "The Honeydripper" and his get-down version of Dvor ks Humoresque. Without question this is an important document, a prelude to his infinite genius, and is easily recommended. ~ Michael G. Nastos
